You may have only heard about Knotweed before and not had the misfortune of directly experiencing it!
If you are aware of it, you may not know that Envirocare Grounds Maintenance’s sister company “Knotweed Eradication” is a specialist company which solely deals with the eradication of this invasive non-native species and others like it, that can cause so many problems.
For those that are less familiar with Knotweed, let us share a little information on it which will help you should you suspect you have some on your land.
Unfortunately, Knotweed will pretty much grow anywhere it can. It doesn’t have a specific favourite hiding spot. With its only thought process being “how quickly can I colonise this area?”, from development sites to residential gardens, everywhere is a potential target for this problem plant! If you have come across it, you may be fooled into thinking the Winter has killed it off, but you would be wrong as it only temporarily dies back to reappear again, just as strong, in Spring. During this time you will see red/green asparagus like shoots forming with the red turning into speckles on an otherwise green stem in Summer.
It is that problematic, that in the UK it was made illegal to spread Japanese Knotweed by the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 and it is classed as a “controlled waste” in Britain under part 2 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, hence the need for specialist licenced eradication.
It can potentially cause structural damage to properties and hard standings. Danny Nightingale, Knotweed Eradication’s, Commercial Director says “Dealing with the problem professionally minimizes the impact of the issue on site. In addition, in the current economic climate some mortgage companies are refusing to lend money on properties if Knotweed is present within the property or on adjacent land, so it is important that it is dealt with before it becomes an issue”.
